For 1987 the Thunderbird's exterior was updated to improve its aerodynamics, with flush mounted composite headlights replacing sealed beams and flush mounted rear quarter glass. The Turbo Coupe had its own front bodywork. The Turbo Coupe also gained an intercooler, giving it essentially the powertrain of the Mustang SVO, with 190 horsepower and a top speed of 143 miles per hour with the five speed manual, and 150 horsepower with the new four speed automatic.
