Two special editions were released in 1988: the Mach 1 Edition Turbo Coupe, produced in 500 examples and sold in bright red only with a rear spoiler, and the Bill Elliot Signature Edition, with 50 examples celebrating the NASCAR driver's racing efforts and featuring red upper bodies. It was the last year of the ninth generation, which was built at Atlanta and Lorain before the MN12 car replaced it.
