The tenth generation Thunderbird was introduced on 26 December 1988 as a 1989 model, co-developed with the Mercury Cougar on the new MN12 platform, with a more aerodynamic body. Engine choices fell to two, as the V8 was dropped, with the base and LX using a 3.8 liter Essex V6 of 140 horsepower, and the Super Coupe adding a supercharged and intercooled version of that engine. The Ford Blue Oval was used on the trunklid for this generation only.
