The Thunderbird was redesigned for 1983 with a rounded aerodynamic body on a shortened 104.2 inch wheelbase of the Fox platform, sharing its chassis with the Mercury Cougar. It came as a base car, a Heritage or the Turbo Coupe, with the standard 3.8 liter Essex V6 rated at 110 horsepower and a three speed automatic, and a 5.0 liter V8 available. The redesign responded to the sales slump of the 1980 to 1982 cars.
