The last year of the eighth generation Thunderbird saw the car offered in three trim levels, the Thunderbird, the Town Landau and the Heritage. Sales had collapsed since the downsizing, and production over the three years of 1980 to 1982 outsold 1979 alone by only about 4,000 cars. The eighth generation was assembled at Ford's Atlanta, Lorain and Chicago plants, and a heavy redesign followed for 1983.
