The third generation, the AX and the AY facelift of 1994, followed the new Mazda 626 and was sold in Japan from October 1991 and in Australia from 1992, when it became Ford's only mid size car. Wheels magazine named it Car of the Year for 1992, and Ford offered four wheel steering on the top TX5. Its model years run from 1991 to 1996. The Telstar was a Mazda 626 with Ford badges and some local styling, sold where Ford wanted a mid size car.
