Ford introduced the third generation Telstar in Japan in October 1991 through its Autorama dealers, following the new Mazda 626. Sedans came with four cylinder and V6 engines, the TX5 hatchback only with a V6, and the earlier wagon continued alongside, in a wide range of trims. Ford later replaced it in most markets with the Mondeo, which was developed as a world car. The Telstar was a Mazda 626 with Ford badges and some local styling, sold where Ford wanted a mid size car.
