The AX series reached Australia in 1992, after Nissan ended Pintara building there and Ford's rebadged Corsair was withdrawn, leaving the Telstar as Ford's only mid size model. It was voted Wheels magazine Car of the Year for 1992, in GLX, Ghia and Ghia 4WS trims. The Telstar was a Mazda 626 with Ford badges and some local styling, sold where Ford wanted a mid size car. Ford later replaced it in most markets with the Mondeo, which was developed as a world car.
