In South Africa the Telstar replaced the Sierra in 1993, assembled by Samcor alongside the Mazda 626, with Telstar Contour and Telstar Mystique versions named after the American Ford and Mercury cars. The Malaysian third generation arrived in August 1992 as a 2.0 litre sedan or V6 TX-5. Ford later replaced it in most markets with the Mondeo, which was developed as a world car. The Telstar was a Mazda 626 with Ford badges and some local styling, sold where Ford wanted a mid size car.
