The facelifted AV came to Australia in January 1990, and from 1990 until 1992 the Telstar was sold there only as the Japanese built, high performance TX5 hatchback. The wagon was added in Japan in September 1990, two years after its Mazda twin, and it stayed in production until 1997. The Telstar was a Mazda 626 with Ford badges and some local styling, sold where Ford wanted a mid size car. Ford later replaced it in most markets with the Mondeo, which was developed as a world car.
