Telstar sedans were taken off sale in Australia in October 1989 because importing them from Japan had become expensive, and the locally assembled Corsair, a rebadged Nissan Pintara, replaced them. A twin cam 1.8 litre engine with 115 horsepower was added in Japan that June. Ford later replaced it in most markets with the Mondeo, which was developed as a world car. The Telstar was a Mazda 626 with Ford badges and some local styling, sold where Ford wanted a mid size car.
