The second generation Escort, released in April 1990 as an early 1991 model, shed almost all commonality with its European namesake and took the chassis of the Mazda 323, since Ford then held a 25 percent stake in Mazda. A four door sedan joined for 1992, sharing underpinnings with the Mazda Protege. The Mercury Tracer adopted the Escort's body, and in Southeast Asia and Australia the car was the Ford Laser. Each model year has its own page.
