A driver side airbag became standard equipment in the 1994 Escort. The car was the second generation built on the Mazda 323 chassis with the Pony and GT having gone, sold as a hatchback, sedan and wagon, with the sedan sharing underpinnings with the Mazda Protege. In Southeast Asia and Australia the car was marketed as the Ford Laser, while in North America the Mercury Tracer used the Escort body.
