For 1996 the Escort saw few changes, as the third generation was introduced for 1997. It was the last year of the second generation, which had been the early 1991 model that dropped almost all commonality with the European Escort, and the last year in which the hatchbacks were offered, as Ford then retired the 3-door and 5-door hatchbacks sold since 1981 and kept only the sedan and wagon. The Mercury Tracer sister car carried on too.
