The second generation Escort was released in April 1990 as an early introduction for the 1991 model year. It largely shed commonality with its European namesake and adopted the chassis of the Mazda 323, as Ford held a 25 percent stake in Mazda. Trims were Pony, LX and GT in three door and five door hatchbacks and a five door wagon, and the car grew less than two inches in length and about 100 pounds in weight.
