For the abbreviated 1990 model year the 88.5 Escort was only built at the Edison Assembly plant in New Jersey, as Ford geared up for the April 1990 introduction of the second generation Escort, which was an early 1991 model. The first generation had run for ten model years with revisions in 1985 and 1988, and its Mercury Lynx sister car had been replaced by the Tracer in 1987. The standard engine made 90 horsepower in that last year.
