The 88.5 Escort remained largely unchanged for the 1989 model year, with its integrated plastic bumpers, enlarged rear side windows, 14 inch wheels on the non-GT models and automatic shoulder belts. The Escort GT used a 110 horsepower 1.9 liter engine with a five speed manual, and the standard car's engine had 90 horsepower, as Ford prepared the next generation Escort, which was introduced in April 1990.
