For 1992 the grille oval around the Ford emblem was enlarged to improve engine cooling, and the base Pony trim was dropped, leaving an unnamed standard Escort. In a major change a four door sedan joined the line for the first time, with the LX-E trim as the Ford counterpart of the Mazda Protege LX and a four door Escort GT with four wheel disc brakes, a larger clutch and bigger anti-roll bars. It was the first Escort sedan.
