The first-generation RL, sold as the 3.5RL, was the North American version of the third-generation Honda Legend. Acura gave up the Legend name after research showed buyers spoke of its cars by model name and did not connect them with the Acura brand. The 3.5RL had a longitudinally mounted 3.5 litre V6 with forged internals, a four-speed automatic, double-wishbone front suspension and a multilink rear, and it was facelifted for 1999 with side-impact airbags and larger brakes.
