Datsun was a Japanese automobile brand owned by Nissan. The name first appeared in 1931 on a small car built by the DAT Motorcar Company, a name meant to suggest a smaller car than the larger DAT, and was changed from Datson to Datsun after Nissan took control of the firm in 1934, because son can also be read as the Japanese word for loss and the sun recalls the national flag. From 1958 to 1986 only the vehicles Nissan exported carried the Datsun name, and it became internationally known through the 510, the Fairlady roadsters and the Z and ZX coupes. Nissan phased the brand out in March 1986, relaunched it in June 2013 for low cost cars aimed at emerging markets, and discontinued it again in April 2022.
