The third generation Corvette was drawn under Bill Mitchell after the Mako Shark II show car. It kept engines and chassis parts from the Sting Ray but had a new body and interior, and it was the Corvette of the 1970s, moving from big block muscle in 1968 to 1972 to a touring sports car with emissions equipment after 1973. It was the second Corvette to carry the Stingray name, and it set the sales record of 53,807 for the 1979 model year. Its model years run from 1968 to 1982.
