Cars built for the 1971 model year from August 1970 looked almost exactly like the 1970 cars inside and out. The big news was under the hood, where the LS6 454 cubic inch big block with aluminum heads delivered 425 horsepower, the most of any of the 1970 to 1972 Corvettes, and could be ordered with an automatic transmission. The LS6 big block of 425 horsepower was offered in 1971 only, and eight ZR1 cars were built that year.
