The 1972 Corvette, built from August 1971, was the last model year with chrome bumpers at both front and rear, with the vacuum operated pop up windshield wiper door, and with the removable rear window found on all the 1968 to 1972 coupes. The LS5 engine could not be sold to California buyers that year. Twenty ZR1 cars were built in 1972, while the ZR2 big block package, planned for 1970, had been released in 1971.
