The 1973 model year began the Corvette's change from a muscle car to a touring sports car. The 454 cubic inch LS4 big block replaced the LS5, and Road and Track wrote that a Corvette with the right options remained a pleasant and rewarding car to drive. An aluminum wheel option was tried on pilot cars but held back for quality reasons until 1976. Hot Rod magazine in 1986 named the LS4 454 Corvette of 1973 and 1974 among the ten most collectable muscle cars.
