The Astra name originated with the Vauxhall badged version of the first front wheel drive Opel Kadett, which had been launched in 1979 as the Opel Kadett D. This model went on sale in March 1980 and replaced the Vauxhall Viva in the United Kingdom. The original Astra was awarded What Car's Car of the Year for 1980. Its model years run from 1980 to 1984. It was built at Opel's Bochum plant in West Germany at first and at Ellesmere Port in England from November 1981.
