The Astra name originated with the Vauxhall badged version of the first front wheel drive Opel Kadett, launched in 1979 as the Opel Kadett D. This model went on sale in March 1980 and replaced the Vauxhall Viva in the UK. Until 1981 both the Kadett and the Astra were sourced solely from Opel's Bochum plant, and the original Astra was awarded What Car's Car of the Year for 1980. The 1980 Astra went on sale in March 1980.
