Introduced on 15 July 1972, the first Rex replaced the R-2, which had itself replaced the long lived Subaru 360. It was a fresh design that shared little of its look with the 360, though it stayed rear engined with a swing axle at the back, and its styling echoed the new Leone. It started as a two door sedan with a water cooled two stroke engine, gained a four stroke in late 1973, and grew a van, a wagon and later a 550 cc engine. Its model years run from 1972 to 1980.
