The Rex of 1974 added a three door, two seat van early in the year that could be registered as a commercial vehicle, which saved owners considerable tax and fees. In the autumn a four seat wagon joined the range with a gentler tune of the four stroke engine, and the car took bumpers redesigned so that larger license plates would fit. The Rex's styling resembled Subaru's new compact car, the Leone. The Rex retained the rear engine layout of the Subaru 360 and R-2.
