In 1973 the Rex lineup grew a four door sedan in February and then changed its engine in October, when the two stroke gave way to a 358 cc water cooled four stroke twin called the EK21 with emissions control. The car received a minor facelift and a new chassis code at the same time, and front disc brakes became an option for the first time. The name Rex comes from the Latin word for king. The Rex superseded the R-2 as Subaru's kei car.
