The Rex got a very minor facelift in March 1979, which mostly brought new wheels, slightly different bumpers and a small front spoiler. In October 1979, answering the cheap Suzuki Alto, Subaru launched a stripped Van called the Family Rex at a very low price of 480,000 yen, which was under two thousand US dollars at the time. The name Rex comes from the Latin word for king. The Rex superseded the R-2 as Subaru's kei car.
