For the 1979 model year the full size Mercury line was downsized to the Panther platform, with cars 17 inches shorter and nearly 1,000 pounds lighter than in 1978. The Grand Marquis became a stand alone model line in 1983 after being a sub model of the Marquis, and was refreshed in 1988. The 4.9 liter 302 V8 was its only engine through 1991. Its model years run from 1979 to 1991. The Grand Marquis was a full size, rear wheel drive sedan built on the Panther chassis.
