The Grand Marquis name first appeared in 1974 as an interior trim package for the Marquis Brougham, and for 1975 all full size Mercury sedans adopted the Marquis nameplate as the division retired the Monterey, in use since 1950. A 400 cubic inch V8 became standard for 1976 and 1977, with a 351 for 1978, and the 460 V8 was optional through 1978. Its model years run from 1975 to 1978. The Grand Marquis was the flagship of the full size Marquis line.
