A 351 cubic inch V8 became standard for 1978, except in California where the 400 V8 was standard, and the 460 V8 was optional through 1978. 1978 was the last year of the big, pre downsizing full size Mercury, as the full size line was downsized to the Panther platform for 1979, with cars 17 inches shorter and nearly 1,000 pounds lighter. It was a rear wheel drive V8 sedan, built by Ford for Mercury. The Colony Park was the full size station wagon of the Mercury range.
