The second generation Grand Marquis was unveiled on 28 November 1990 for the 1992 model year, in the most extensive change to the Panther platform cars since 1979. Development began in early 1987, with production starting on 14 January 1991. It was marketed to younger buyers who needed a larger car than the Taurus or Sable, and from 1992 it was produced solely as a four door sedan as the Colony Park wagon was discontinued. Its model years run from 1992 to 1997.
