Unveiled on 28 November 1990 for the 1992 model year, the second generation Grand Marquis was part of the most extensive changes to the Panther platform cars since 1979. Development began in early 1987, with design approval in 1988, the start of production on 14 January 1991 and introduction on 21 March 1991. Ford sought a younger buyer, in need of a larger car than a Taurus or Sable, and the Colony Park wagon was discontinued.
