Pininfarina is the marque under which the Italian design firm and coachbuilder Pininfarina S.p.A., based in Cambiano near Turin, shows the concept cars and prototypes it creates in its own name, as distinct from the production cars it designs or builds under contract for other makers such as Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Fiat, Nash and Cadillac. The firm was founded in 1930 by Battista Pinin Farina, took the single-word name Pininfarina in 1961 when the President of Italy authorized the change of the family surname, and was acquired by the Mahindra Group in 2015. Its own-branded show cars include the Nido city car of 2004, the Sintesi fuel cell concept of 2008 and the H2 Speed hydrogen concept of 2016. Contract-built models such as the Alfa Romeo Spider and Cadillac Allante belong to the makes that sold them, not to this marque.
