Authi, short for Automoviles de Turismo Hispano Ingleses, was a car maker based at Arazuri near Pamplona in Spain. It was registered in November 1965 as a joint venture between the British Motor Corporation and the Santander metalworking firm Nueva Montaña Quijano, so that BMC could sell its cars in a Spanish market that protected local builders from imports and from foreign takeover. The company therefore built close copies of Austin and Morris models under licence, with bodies shipped from England and engines, gearboxes and many other parts made in Spain. Its Mini was the volume seller, with more than 140,000 built before the plant shut. British Leyland took a controlling share in 1967 and the firm ended in 1976, when the nearly new factory passed to SEAT after a bid from General Motors fell through.
