The fourth generation Mazda3, the BP series, was unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show on 28 November 2018, and global sales began in early 2019. It was designed under Yasutake Tsuchida and given very different sedan and hatchback bodies that share only the hood and headlights. It swapped the multilink rear suspension for a torsion beam, offered all wheel drive for the first time in North America, and added the Skyactiv-X spark controlled compression ignition engine. The Axela name was dropped in Japan. Its model years run from 2019 to 2025.
