The first generation Tribute, the EP, was jointly developed with Ford on the CD2 platform and debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show in 2000 as a compact crossover, with its own exterior and interior unlike its siblings. It had front or all wheel drive and a 2.0 liter Ford Zetec four or a 3.0 liter Duratec V6, and was sold in Japan from November 2001. A facelift for the 2005 model year brought a Mazda 2.3 liter MZR four, and a larger facelift came to Asia and the Pacific in 2006. Its model years run from 2000 to 2006.
