The Tribute in 2002 was in its first full year in Japan and its third on the world market, a compact crossover that was priced below the Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner in Ford's CD2 SUV lineup. The 2.0 liter Ford Zetec or Mazda YF four, with a timing belt, and the 3.0 liter Duratec V6 with a timing chain, powered the car, which had a firmer suspension than the Escape for Mazda's sporty image. The Tribute was based on the front wheel drive Mazda 626 platform, which was also the basis of the Ford Escape on the CD2 platform.
