In Japan the refresh of the Tribute that followed took place in December 2003, ahead of the North American 2005 model year, bringing Mazda's 2.3 liter MZR four cylinder engine as the base engine and an automatic transmission for the four, with the 3.0 liter Duratec V6 remaining the option. The Tribute and the Escape were sharing the same CD2 platform and the Tribute was Mazda's cheapest SUV, assembled in Missouri, Hofu and Taiwan.
