The second generation MX-5, the NB, was unveiled in 1997 and sold from 1998 for the 1999 model year. It kept the proportions of the NA but lost the retractable headlamps because of tougher pedestrian safety tests, and it had a little more power, a revised interior and the option of a six speed manual. In 2001 the front and rear styling changed and variable valve timing raised the 1.8 liter engine to 142 horsepower, giving the NB2. The turbocharged Mazdaspeed MX-5 followed for 2004. Its model years run from 1998 to 2004.
