In 2000 the Guinness Book of World Records declared the MX-5 the best selling two seat sports car in history, with a total production at that point of 531,890 units. The second generation NB was in its third year of sale, still a lightweight roadster with the same proportions as the first generation and with fixed headlamps instead of the earlier retractable ones, built at Mazda's Hiroshima plant. A longitudinal truss called the Powerplant Frame joins the engine to the differential.
