The second generation MX-5 went on sale in 1998 for the 1999 model year, after being unveiled in 1997. Mazda kept the same proportions as the first generation but removed the retractable headlamps because of stricter pedestrian safety testing, and the NB had a slight increase in engine power, a changed interior and the option of a six speed manual gearbox. It was on the Car and Driver 10Best list for 1998. The roadster was built at Mazda's Hiroshima plant.
