The first generation Demio was developed in a short time from existing parts on the old DW platform to follow the minivan boom, a simple small wagon with two rows of seats and a wide luggage space, with a height made to fit mechanical car parks. It sold as the 121 abroad, and as the Festiva Mini Wagon to Ford. It won the Japan Car of the Year special award and the RJC Car of the Year in its first year. Its model years run from 1996 to 2002.
