The CX-8 was first unveiled in Japan on 14 September 2017 as the only three row SUV offered there, and it became the only three row vehicle of the company after Mazda ended minivans such as the Biante and Premacy. It resembled the second generation CX-9, though shorter and narrower to suit Japanese conditions. It was introduced in Australia in 2018 and assembled in Malaysia from 2019. Its model years run from 2017 to 2026.
