The first Capella was introduced in May 1970 as an intermediate car between the smaller Familia and the larger Luce, with 1.5 or 1.6 liter four cylinder SOHC engines and, in some markets, rotary engines as the RX-2. It was rear wheel drive and sold in sedan and coupe forms, as the 616 and 618 in the United States. A facelift came in February 1974 and the first generation lasted until 1978. Its model years run from 1970 to 1977.
