The first Mazda Capella was introduced in May 1970 as an intermediate alternative to the smaller Familia and the larger Luce. It was powered by four cylinder SOHC engines of 1.5 or 1.6 liters, producing 92 or 100 PS, and a Capella 1500 was added in October 1970 to join the 1.6. It was a rear wheel drive car in sedan and coupe forms, and the rotary engined version was sold in the United States as the RX-2, the same year.
