The Capella of 1977 was the last full year of the first generation, in its eighth year. The second generation rear wheel drive Capella was introduced in Japan in October 1977, so that both generations were on sale in the final months of the year. The first generation was by then sold in sedan and coupe bodies, powered by 1.5 or 1.6 liter four cylinder engines, and lasted until 1978 in some markets. The rotary engined version was sold in the United States as the RX-2.
