The Honda Gold Wing is a Japanese touring motorcycle built by Honda, introduced in 1975 and built around a flat, horizontally opposed engine configuration chosen for its smooth running characteristics and low center of gravity, a departure from the inline and V-configuration engines common in other large touring motorcycles of the period. Built progressively larger and more heavily equipped over successive generations, eventually growing to a six-cylinder engine and adding features including a reverse gear and an integrated stereo system, the Gold Wing became widely regarded as the standard against which other long-distance touring motorcycles were measured. Its combination of comfort, reliability and load capacity made it especially popular among riders undertaking extended cross-country touring trips.
